Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Spearmint, tobacco leaf, chocolate, cedar, cherries, and currants pop from the aromatic profile. The palate takes it a step further with its richly-textured layers of sweet, ripe black fruits notes of sea-salt and mint in the finish. This is showing much better in the bottle than it did in barrel, which is always a good thing. The wine blends 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2028-2040.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate
A serious, brooding wine, the 2023 Capbern offers up aromas of cassis and dark berries mingled with licorice and spices. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with good depth and concentration, it's built around lively acids and powdery tannins. It's a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon (an unusually high proportion for Capbern) and 29% Merlot with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Coming from the team of Calon Ségur, the 2023 Château Capbern is a terrific Saint-Estèphe, and it goes a long way toward showing the strength of the Médoc in the vintage. Cassis, plums, smoked tobacco, and graphite all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a round, layered mouthfeel and beautiful tannins. I love the overall purity of fruit, and it's a ripe, sexy, yet flawlessly balanced beauty that should drink nicely right out of the gate yet also age gracefully.

Tasting note
Château Capbern is a Cru Bourgeois wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe region of Bordeaux. It produces a red wine of good structure, easily capable of aging 10 to 20 years in good vintages.
-
The wine typically has around 55 to 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 25 to 40 percent Merlot. Small amounts of Cabernet Franc (in some vintages) and Petit Verdot complete the blend.
-
The estate had been in the ownership of the Gasqueton family for ten generations, and was previously called Capbern Gasqueton. In 2012 it was sold alongside Calon-Ségur to the French insurance company Suravenir, who dropped the second part of the name from the 2013 vintage.
-
Vineyards and winemakingThere are around 32 hectares (79 acres) in production within a 38ha estate. In 2021 the plantings were 52 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 45 percent Merlot, 2 percent Petit Verdot and 1 percent Cabernet Franc. The proportion of Merlot has increased in recent years.
-
The vineyards are located in two different areas, with a mix of gravel, clay and chalky soils. One plot lies close to Calon Segur near the center of Saint-Estèphe, the other closer to the Gironde River, near Château Meyney. Fruit is hand harvested; the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in oak for around 18 months. There is around 60 percent new barrels each year since 2013 (the figure was one third until 2012). There is a second wine called Le Grand Village Capbern.
