Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Oakier and toastier than usual—and than expected—the 2023 La Clotte opens with aromas of spices, dark berries, flowers and gentian. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and layered, it shows a tangy, lively mid-palate and concludes with a long, saline and ethereal finish. The blend comprises 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Deep purple-hued, the 2023 Château La Clotte offers a rocking nose of cassis, classy oak, graphite, flint, and exotic flowers. Based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from a terraced hillside of 58-year-old vines and brought up 18 months in new barrels, it's medium-bodied, pure, and balanced, with nicely integrated oak, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I'd be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar, and it will keep for a solid two decades. Drink 2026-2045.
James Suckling
Spicy aromas of toast, hazelnut, dark chocolate, chalk, dark cherries, citrus and berries. Medium- to full-bodied with fine tannins and a long, juicy finish. Well structured and quite chalky and precise in nature. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2026.
Druvor
85% Merlot & 15% Cabernet Franc.
Tasting note
- Acquired in 2014 by the Vauthier family, Château La Clotte is a small vine garden of four hectares located behind the ramparts to the south of Saint-Émilion. La Clotte is a building nestled against the cliff face with deep quarry labyrinths beneath its vineyard. The vineyard has been thought through plot by plot to reveal the richness of its eleven plots. The cellar is dug into the rock and ensures ideal conditions for aging.

Like its neighbor Ausone, despite a hot and humid spring, the character of the slopes of Saint-Émilion defines this vintage. Meticulous work in the vineyard focused on controlling vigor and managing vegetation cover. Ripeness was optimal thanks to the return of dry and mild weather in September. Intense purple in color. The great aromatic purity and notes of red berry fruits, spices, and fresh almonds characterize the expression of this vintage. On the palate, the attack is smooth, and the velvety tannins are enveloping. The finish is precise with a tension that is perfectly balanced.
