Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2014 Palmer builds on the promise that it showed in barrel. It is clearly a more understated and nuanced Palmer from winemaker Thomas Duroux this year, but a Margaux with exquisite delineation and precision, hints of blackberry, boysenberry and a touch of pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. It feels supple and lithe in the mouth. It will not have the depth and power of the subsequent 2015 Palmer, yet the

This really develops wonderfully in the glass starting out earthy with mushrooms and spices and then turns to dark fruit such as blackberries and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, very intense and minerally. Firm and silky tannins and a long, long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink in 2022.

(45% Merlot, 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot) The nose is powerful, pure and precisely concentrated. It reveals notes of blackcurrant, blackberry and slight notes of strawberry associated with a few notes of ripe fruit, undergrowth and a touch of Zan. The palate is pure, nicely mineral, racy, fruity, complex and elegant. A small aerial side in the mouth. It expresses notes of blackberry fresh, ripe fruit, red fruit (especially raspberries) associated with touches of plum, cassis, flowers, cocoa and toasted oak. A slight hint of toast on the palate. Tannins are fine and elegant. Good length.
Unprecedented. From December to July, incessant rains provoked the development of mildew. Then, during a hot, dry summer, the vines focused all their energy into the remaining grapes. Their power and concentration finally reached an exceptional level. In the winery, all of this led to an unprecedented decision: every lot would be selected for the blending of Château Palmer… Extraordinary.'
