The 2024 Pontet-Canet underlines the fact that daring to harvest late paid dividends in this challenging vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, black raspberries and plums mingled with accents of rose petals, licorice and exotic spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and integrated, with mid-palate density that's all too rare this year, it's layered, suave and seamless, concluding with a long, sapid finish. Picking began on September 26 and concluded on October 11, with the heart of the estate's old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon coming in between the seventh and the ninth, well after many châteaux had finished their harvest. Greater reactivity during the season means that Pontet-Canet's vineyards are gaining in vigor, while in the winery, a lighter touch with extraction, systematic climate control and a wholesale refinement of the estate's cooperage choices have brought new harmony and sensuality to this estate's wines. That has combined with a willingness to take risks with harvest dates to deliver what is clearly one of the wines of the vintage. The blend is roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

A classic expression of this Château that’s still in its adolescent phase, the 2005 Château Pontet-Canet has a youthful ruby/plum hue to go with incredibly pure aromatics of cassis, graphite, crushed stone like minerality, and subtle cedar pencil notes. I love its overall purity and focus, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has ripe, yet building tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. While it clearly offers pleasure, especially if you don’t mind some tannins, it deserves another 3-5 years of bottle age, and it should have a two decade or so prime drinking plateau.

Good full ruby-red. Complex, enticing aromas of black raspberry, licorice, minerals, bitter chocolate, lead pencil and pungent cedar; just this side of exotic. Wonderfully silky, sweet and thick, with a powerful minerality framing the currant, graphite and spice flavors. This boasts superb inner-mouth energy and great length, with the full, ripe tannins totally enrobed by the wine's mid-palate richness. (My sample of the 2006 was old and tired, so I'll wait until next year to report on the finished wine; this was a star in the early going.)

According to Alfred Tesseron, there were three generations of grapes during the drawn-out flowering, and after all the mildew problems of the summer and the elimination of fruit in early July there was still a huge range of ripeness on August 20. So he hired a team to cut off all the pale grapes, ultimately producing just 28 hectoliters per hectare.

52% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot, 4% petit verdot & 1% cabernet franc

cinquième cru  Pauillac Introduktion till slottet Château Pontet-Canet är en vingård i Pauillac-beteckningen av vinregionen Bordeaux i Frankrike. Alfred and Justine Tesseron, along with winemaker Mathieu Bessonnet, welcomed me to this Pauillac estate. In a few days’ time, they would welcome 800 guests for their annual Commanderie dinner, though not yours truly because I would be on the plane back to the UK, writing this report. This is one of the most fascinating wines of the vintage…

“We received a ridiculous amount of rain in winter until May 22,” Bessonnet begins. “It was also hot. There was an early bud burst on March 21 and it rained in April. We had an early mildew attack on the leaves, so we had to spray 31 times during the season. We used 5.7 kg of copper, which is quite reasonable [the legal limit is around 4 kg per year over seven years]. It stopped raining, and flowering took place on June 6 in good conditions. I have no idea why, but we did not have coulure or millerandage. It started to rain again towards the end of June and we lost one generation of leaves, but it did not infect the grapes. The summer was dry and not so hot. The average temperature throughout the year was 14.4°C. At the end of August, the weather became unstable, and it was like that until the end of harvest. There were showers in September and October. We started picking on September 26 with the Merlot. The Cabernet was picked October 4, then on October 7, 8 and 9, finishing on October 11. We focused on the heart of the vineyard in the centre and waited until we had ripeness. We are confident using the sorting table, and in some blocks, we took out almost half the fruit. We don’t add SO2 until malolactic fermentation and didn’t do any punching down, just pumping over in the small vats.”
