Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2020 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol of 14.6%. It is aging for an anticipated 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Deep purple-black in color, it bursts from the glass with bombastic scents of stewed black plums, crème de cassis and blueberry pie with nuances of violets and licorice, plus a waft of menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of juicy black fruits with plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing spicy. This is a very different style from the grand vin (Calon-Ségur), but also very delicious.

This is spicy and juicy with blackberry, bark and some spices. Full and chewy. Flavorful finish. Some lead pencil and iodine. Second wine of Calon.

On the nose it is elegant, gourmand and it offers freshness, minerality as well as racy texture, depth and a certain richness (in finesse). It reveals notes of fleshy blackberry, crushed strawberry and more slightly blueberry associated with touches of small red fruits, hints of vanilla, hazelnut, exotic spices as well as discreet hints of Szechuan pepper with a subtle hint of cornflower and rose. On the palate is fruity, elegant, fresh and offers minerality, a fine flavor, a very nice balance, a certain power (all in finesse), presence of an airy side and a very nice delicacy, depth, delicacy as well as a nice fruit on the juice and flesh. This wine expresses notes of fleshy / pulpy blackberry, raspberry and more slightly cherry associated with touches of bright blueberry as well as hints of vanilla, caramelization, toast, exotic spices and a subtle hint of crushed hazelnut. Good length. The tannins are smooth. A little mellow / nice chewiness on the retro.
Wine Maniacs
Fresh, precisely selected fruits deliver intense cassis aromas. Has some depth, with angular tannins. Overall it's refreshing and pleasant to drink in its youth. A good candidate for food-pairing.
Falstaff
Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle ochre brightening on rim. Delicate roasted aromas, a hint of vanilla, black sweet cherry, a hint of liquorice and candied orange zest, inviting bouquet. Juicy, ripe cherry, sweet plum, ripe tannins, fine nougat touch, freshly structured, long, has ageing potential.

Årgången 2020 kommer att komma ihåg för den tidiga utvecklingen av vinstockarna. Mellan oktober 2019 och februari 2020 bidrog vissa episoder av regn till att skapa tillräckliga vattenreserver. En varm vår med kraftiga regn gynnade tidig men heterogen knoppsprängning. Ändå begränsades denna heterogenitet av arbete på jorden, vilket gjorde att den värmdes upp snabbare. Medan de varma temperaturerna och kraftiga nederbörden i april väckte oro för vinrankornas hälsa, möjliggjorde de goda väderförhållandena i mitten av maj en snabb och jämn blomning. Månaderna juni och juli var extremt torra (5 mm nederbörd på 55 dagar), vilket orsakade betydande vattenstress. På grund av detta torra väder tillsammans med kyliga temperaturer, utfördes en noggrann bladstrippning på den östra sidan av vingården (där solen går upp), för att uppmuntra fenolsyntesen av druvorna. Regniga dagar i början av augusti återupplivade druvornas mognadsprocess. Vingårdens fantastiska läge och vingårdsteamens arbete minimerade hälsoriskerna i samband med hög luftfuktighet och värme. Den indiska sommaren fram till skörden möjliggjorde en optimal mognad av druvorna. Med hänsyn till årgångens brådska och de höga temperaturerna i september togs beslutet att skörda tidigt, för att bevara druvornas spänning och täthet.
