James Suckling
Black and blue fruit, walnuts, gravy, vanilla, praline and cigar box on the nose. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Balanced, layered and polished with a fleshy texture. Harmonious, with elegance and intensity. Beautiful finish. Wow. Drink from 2025.

The 2019 Haut-Marbuzet has turned out very nicely indeed, offering up a deep bouquet of berry fruit, loamy soil, forest floor and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids. Already persuasively seamless and integrated, and much less marked by its new oak than was the case for this château a decade ago, this is well worth seeking out.
Druvor
55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc & 1% Petit Verdot

The inimitable Henri Duboscq, alongside his sons Hugues and Bruno, presides over this Saint-Estèphe reference point, an estate once owned by the Mac Carthy family that was broken up and subsequently reconstituted piece by piece throughout the 20th century. These are some of the most precocious, early-ripening terroirs of the Médoc, and they are perfectly adapted to the lavish, sensual, gourmand style that Duboscq seeks and which makes his wines so singular. Matured in entirely new barrels, Haut Marbuzet is demonstrative, even flamboyant in its youth; yet its longevity is just as impressive, and vintages such as 1982 and 1990 continue to drink brilliantly today, giving the lie to the notion that their early appeal compromises their ability to age. Recent vintages have been especially integrated and harmonious out of the gates, proving that this estate is producing some of the best wines in its history today. In any revision of the 1855 classification, Haut Marbuzet would be certain to acquire classified growth status.
