Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux

Wine Maniacs

Deep toned, dark and intense. Highly expressive dark fruits, with vibrant acidity bringi ng luminosity. Soft and gentle tannins, full of energy and spiciness. Long finish. Unusual approach with harvesting in two stages. For the second batch of about 25% of the grapes remaining, they waited until after October 8th's rain. Then finished harvesting on the 12th. Soft and gentle tannins, full of energy and spiciness. Vats of 27hl to 70hl were used and gravity fed, some grapes were also fermented in amphora. 12% press wine was used.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2022 Durfort Vivens offers up aromas of sweet crème de cassis, violets, boot polish, creamy new oak and hints of saddle leather and cigar ash. Medium to full-bodied, layered and creamy, with a rich core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and a long, lactic finish, it has turned out nicely but isn't quite as precise as the exceptional 2019 and 2020 duo.

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Château Durfort-Vivens showed brilliantly and is a seriously good wine in the making. Vinified at Brane-Cantenac and aging in 60% new oak, with 40% in amphora, it has a pure, focused, medium to full-bodied style as well as both red and black fruits, some violet and floral nuances, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. This is one of those wines that builds with time in the glass, and it should clearly be outstanding, if not truly exceptional.

James Suckling

Rich but very refined and layered, showing spot-on ripeness, the basis for finesse and complexity. Nuanced paprika, minerals, cocoa powder and cigar box with currants and berries. Intense and perfumed, showing fine, dusty tannins and a tight-grained, lengthy finish. Give it three years to soften more, and it will shine. Drink from 2028.

Druvor

94.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot & 0,5% Cabernet Franc

The 62-hectare estate, of which some 55 hectares are planted, has been directed by Gonzague Lurton since 1992 and farmed biodynamically since 2013. Soils are quaternary gravels, with a rather low percentage of clay when compared with the likes of Châteaux Margaux and Palmer. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, delivering wines of perfume, intensity and concentration. Lurton finds that physiological maturity and analytical maturity are much more synchronized with the new farming methods, even if in a vintage such as 2018 he's suffered, producing a mere 6,000 bottles. Recent vintages have certainly been on a qualitative roll, and today Durfort Vivens unquestionably lives up to its 1855 second growth status.
