James Suckling
A perfumed nose of mulberries, plums, chocolate orange and cloves. Hints of toffee, too. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins. Caressing, velvety and rich core of dark fruit. So supple and polished. 88.5% merlot, 7% cabernet sauvignon and 4.5% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

The 2019 Gazin is a fleshy, dramatic wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of ripe berry fruit mingled with subtle hints of truffle and violets, its new oak already entirely integrated. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's broad and textural, with lively acids, powdery tannins and fine length on the finish.

The nose is racy and offers elegance, power, delicacy as well as richness (in finesse), a beautiful finesse and intensity. It reveals notes of ripe wild cassis, wild strawberry, small notes of small wild black fruits associated with touches of small blue fruits, cuben/black pepper as well as hints of violet, cornflower and cardamom. The palate is fruity, mineral, well-balanced and offers a fine acidulous frame, a beautiful definition, precision, a beautiful finesse of the grain and tension. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy/juicy blackberry, crushed small black fruits, small notes of juicy/pulpy blueberry associated with touches of crushed wild raspberry, toasted/ripe hazelnut, cardamom, lilac, cornflower as well as discreet hints of nutmeg, camphor and spices. Tannins are fine, elegant and structuring. A small sapidity in the finish. Good length.

The 2019 Château Gazin checks in as 89% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Cabernet Franc. I'm not sure it's going to match the 2018, but it's certainly not far off and has a wonderful mix of freshness, richness, and complexity that's the hallmark of this great vintage. Lots of ripe red and black fruits, tobacco, mocha, and spring flower notes all emerge from the glass, and it's beautifully balanced, building nicely with time in the glass, and just has everything in the right places. This gorgeous Pomerol in the making will be accessible in its youth and drink brilliantly for 15-20 years.
