James Suckling

A dense and pretty wine for this less-than-optimum vintage. Full to medium body with firm and polished tannins. Flavors of currants, berries, mint and spearmint. Just ready to drink now.

93% cabernet sauvignon & 7% merlot

Tasting note

Last tasted three or four years ago, the 2004 Mouton-Rothschild is a satisfactory wine, even if in my opinion it pales again subsequent success in so-called "challenging" vintages such as 2006 or 2008. It came across tight and broody on the nose, a hint of seaweed tincturing the black fruit, later on a whiff of smoke. It does not feel as refined as either the 2004 Lafite-Rothschild or the 2004 Latour. The palate is medium-bodied and shows more class than the aromatics: cohesive and with just the right amount of grip, a little chewy perhaps but with a pleasant saline sensation towards the "correct" finish. It ticks all the boxes but does not go that extra mile. Tasted September 2016.

At just over 80 hectares planted to vine, Mouton Rothschild, with its deep gravel soils, preponderance of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon and distinctive style, is one of Bordeaux's most characterful wines. Today, under technical director Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy (who took the reins after stints at Opus One and Clerc Milon), the estate doesn't rest on its laurels: Mouton now hosts its very own research-and-development department, with its own experimental winery, and all sorts of projects are underway. In the vineyards, canopy management is being adapted on a site-by-site basis, with higher or lower hedging depending on the soils' hydrological profile; cover crops are increasingly part of the estate's strategy; drainage is being optimized in certain parcels; and a massal-selection program, housed in an in-house nursery, has been launched. In the winery, the parcel-by-parcel approach continues.
