Andreas Larsson - Tasted
This is a youthful, very intense colour, ruby-red, really colouring the glass. The nose is also very youthful intense, pure, quite modern style here. There is a generous amount of oak, offering some slightly smoky flavour aromas, vanilla. Dark fruit, really ripe fruit, such as plum and blackberry. Really nice bite on the palate. I like this combination of concentration and freshness. It has a lot of lushes fruit, those dark berry notes with some hints of chocolate. I think the oak is really discreet, not too noticeable on the palate. It shows some roasted flavours on the finish. Really lushes and enjoyable fruit, first of all. It is underlined by plenty of tannin, quite grainy, quite fine, still showing their youth. They are really vigorous and present, but overall the balance is fine. The great emphasis is again the lushes dark fruit. This is doubtlessly a young wine that should develop more complexity from further aging. I think it has a good balance in there. There is nothing hard or harsh there. Good level of freshness, giving a lift to that modern dark fruit. Oak is in place, really good length, good purity of fruit. A wine that should definitely go along well. But for those who would like this style of wine in its youth, twenty minutes in the decanter, with a big piece of steak that should do the job.
Wine Enthusiast
True to the estate's signature style, this is a powerful, luscious wine. It's ripe with plum and berry fruits, layered with dark, firm tannins. There is a juicy element as well as black-coffee flavors from the enthusiastic use of wood. Give it time to integrate properly and drink from 2022.
Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
One of the better wines of this difficult vintage, popped and poured, the wine is round, soft and delivers its medium-bodied, licorice, espresso, black cherry and earthy nose and palate presence with ease. No decanting needed, just pop, pour and enjoy.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Full-bodied and atypically rich and concentrated for a 2013, it boasts beautiful blueberry and creme de cassis fruit as well as underlying chalky minerality, and good richness and concentration. It is a noteworthy homage to Christine Vallete’s brilliant efforts at Troplong Mondot, which resulted in the elevation of this estate in the 2012 St.-Emilion classification. It can be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.
It has been less than six months since the irrepressible and brilliant Christine Vallette passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. I must confess that tasting at Troplong Mondot was a powerful emotional experience. However, the 2013 is clearly one of the stars of the vintage.
