Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Aromas of rich, plummy fruit, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and toasty oak preface the 2019 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy wine with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and powdery tannins. Ample and enveloping, it's more demonstrative than its counterpart, La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion from across the street.
VertdeVin
The nose is fruity, fresh, racy and offers a fine grain, a small power as well as elegance. It reveals notes of wild blackberry, ripe/juicy wild cassis, small notes of racy minerality associated with small touches violet, fresh/ripe strawberry as well as subtle hints of liquorice, cardamom, a very discreet hint of crushed blueberry, pepper and spices. The palate is fruity, well-balanced, racy and offers salinity, tension, a juicy/acidulous frame as well as a racy minerality, a beautiful precision, a fine creaminess, delicacy, a good freshness, straightness (in finesse/juiciness). On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy blackberry, juicy/crunchy cassis, small notes of raspberry associated with touches of racy minerality, cardamom, toasted as well as a subtle hint of spices (in the background) and an imperceptible hint of pepper. Good length. Tannins are fine and well-built. Very discreet hints of toasted/vanilla on the persistence. A beautiful grain on the finish.
Druvor
35% merlot, 19% cabernet franc, 46% cabernet sauvignon
Tasting note
'This is the new name for the second wine of Haut-Brion, replacing Bahans from the 2007 vintage - as Prince Robert of Luxembourg said, not even the French, could pronounce 'Bahans'. Intriguing, already a leafy note, otherwise quite closed. Good sweetness of fruit and flavour, but note of bitterness to the tannins.'
