Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Black plums, smoke, espresso, cherries, flowers and cocoa fill the nose. Medium-bodied, soft, round, fresh, sweet and polished with chalky tannins, olives, peppery spices and leafy nuances in the finish. Enjoy this while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. The wine blends 70% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. 13.6% ABV. Drink 2024-2036.
Wine Enthusiast
Woodland fruits with a backdrop of black-pepper spices set the scene for the second-label wine of Haut-Brion. It is powerful, with some firm tannins and integrated acidity. Drink this fine wine from 2027.
Robert Parker Wine Advocate
More closed and shy than La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, the 2021 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion offers up a delicate, complex bouquet with aromas of plums, spices, lead pencil, licorice and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied with a structuring core of fruit, it’s seamless and vibrant with a long, penetrating finish. Keep it over the next decade.
Jeb Dunnuck
Red and black currants, smoked tobacco, iron, and spicy, almost meaty notes all emerge from the 2021 Le Clarence De Haut-Brion, a medium-bodied, pure, seamless, incredibly elegant second wine that has ripe, polished tannins and a great finish.
Druvor
35% merlot, 19% cabernet franc, 46% cabernet sauvignon
Tasting note
'This is the new name for the second wine of Haut-Brion, replacing Bahans from the 2007 vintage - as Prince Robert of Luxembourg said, not even the French, could pronounce 'Bahans'. Intriguing, already a leafy note, otherwise quite closed. Good sweetness of fruit and flavour, but note of bitterness to the tannins.'
