Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Good things come to those that wait. Due to the higher than normal sugar levels in the wine, 2015 Le Pin was not able to be tasted during the premiers. This stunner was certainly worth waiting for. Deep ruby in color, with truffle, floral, black and blue fruit and a touch of kirsch in the nose, the wine shows a lush, silky, decadent, mouth feel. The opulent finish does not quit, as the spicy cherry griotte, kirsch, marzipan and clay tinged finish lasts close to 60 seconds! The wine reached 14.2% alcohol with a pH of 3.72, produced from 100% Merlot, the wine is aging in 100% new, French oak barrels. If you cannot afford a bottle, and not many people can, try and find a rich friend that is lucky enough to buy the wine. It is going to be hard to find as only 500 cases were made this year.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Le Pin hits the dance floor with a completely gregarious nose of plum preserves, blackberry tart and wild blueberries, boldly accented by suggestions of Chinese five spice, cigar boxes, menthol and violets plus an earthy waft of underbrush. Full-bodied, concentrated, muscular and earthy with a firm backbone of exquisitely ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, it has an incredibly long finish featuring exotic spice and mineral layers.

The 2015 Château Le Pin showed beautifully, with an elegant, almost Burgundian style in its weight and texture. Darker raspberries, ripe cherries, spicy wood, tobacco, and loamy earth are followed by a beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, balanced red that’s surprisingly accessible and open, and probably on a faster evolutionary track than the 2016. It's a brilliant, seamless, incredibly seductive Pomerol to enjoy over the coming 15-20 years.
Vinous
The 2015 Le Pin never clicks into gear on the nose. There are hints of red berry fruit, sage and a touch of wild mint but they need to coalesce more. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth and harmonious entry, though the vanillary oak is too vocal, which slightly curtails the finish. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners.
James Suckling
I am lost for words to describe this young wine, but it’s like walking into the best flower shop in Paris. Flowers galore with dark fruits as well. Full-bodied, very tannic and exotic. Amazing muscle and finesse at the same time. Phenomenal wine. This is half a normal harvest. Greatest ever, clearly. Wait until 2026.

Located at the heart of the Pomerol plateau, the Le Pin estate has belonged to Jacques Thienpont since 1979. The vineyard is now made up of seven plots covering a total of just two hectares. The estate is planted with 100% Merlot in gravelly clay and sandy gravel soils with traces of iron. Le Pin is a wine made in very limited quantities. It is the result of an ambitious winemaking process in small stainless steel vats, followed by maturation in new barrels for 18 months.

Francois Thienpont
Today, Pomerol's famous Le Pin consists of seven small parcels, all within a stone's throw of the original hectare of vines, purchased by Jacques Thienpont from the Laubie family in 1979, that launched this phenomenon of the wine world. This is a warm, rather precocious site that ripens rapidly, so viticulture (working with cover crops and less systematic deleafing) and winemaking (small, parcel-by-parcel vinifications to permit optimal harvest dates; only two rackings; only 65-70% new oak compared with the 100% of yesteryear; and earlier bottling in riper years) have both adapted to a changing climate. Le Pin thus remains a wine of drama, texture and generosity, without tipping over into excess; a high-wire act in a vintage such as 2019, but one with Thienpont and his team have performed with mastery.
