The nose is aromatic and harmonious. It reveals fine notes of blackberry, black berry and toasted oak associated with a fine touch of Zan and a discreet note of violet. The palate is fruity, mineral, silky, suave, elegant and offers harmony and righteousness. In the mouth this wine expresses notes of blackberry, cassis and a touch of liquorice combined with a touch of raspberry, a slight note of minerality as well as a few discreet oaky notes. Tannins are fine and supple. Good length.

The 2014 Canon has a very well-defined, precise bouquet with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry scents infused with minerals. The aromatics here are utterly captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and very well-judged acidity. There is tension and poise to this Saint Emilion, gently fanning out with a delicate spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. Though surely destined to be over-shadowed by the extraordinary 2015, this Canon deserves a berth in your cellar.

While a step back from the 2015, the 2014 Château Canon is still a strong effort that shows the hallmark elegance of the 2014 vintage. Black raspberries, cherries, exotic spices and lots of floral notes emerge from this medium to full-bodied, extraordinarily elegant, seamless Saint-Emilion that shines for its complexity and nuance more than for power and richness. Drink this beauty anytime over the coming 15-20 years.
Located on the upper plateau, Château Canon recently purchased the Grand Cru Classé estate of Château Matras, which lies mostly on prime south/southwest slopes, bringing their total acreage from just over 20 hectares to 34 hectares. This gives them a variety of terroirs to work with and the estate is planted to roughly 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon with a vine age around 30 years in age. The wines are always manually harvested, destemmed, fermented in stainless steel, and see malo and aging in 70% new oak. Both the 2014 and 2015 are beautiful wines, with the 2015 having that extra dimension and sexiness of the 2015 vintage. Both need bottle age though so patience is going to be your friend.
