Tim Atkin

Wine Maniacs

Expressive black fruits, with delicate floral note. A fairly open bouquet, with lots of nuances on the aromatics and continued on the palate. Great density, plentiful fruit concentration, freshness, full of energy, with a lean structure. Already showing some complexity.

Falstaff

Very pure cassis fruit, floral overtones. Elderberry, mint, some caramel. Complex, with much nuance. On the palate an elegant creaminess, not over-extended, then with a fine but also firm tannin at just the right level, obvious minerality in the background. The tannin has no green hints whatsoever and dissolves juicily as it peaks on the palate. The finish is compact and pointed, remaining harmonious for a long time. Extremely impressive, and for the long haul.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2020 Durfort Vivens has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark cherries and berries mingled with hints of licorice, baking chocolate and mint. Medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, it's layered and concentrated, with lively acids and broad structural shoulders, its generous endowment of powdery tannin asserting itself on the youthfully firm finish. More tightly wound than the extroverted, charming 2019, the 2020 will demand patience, but it's a very strong performance for this estate.

The 62-hectare estate, of which some 55 hectares are planted, has been directed by Gonzague Lurton since 1992 and farmed biodynamically since 2013. Soils are quaternary gravels, with a rather low percentage of clay when compared with the likes of Châteaux Margaux and Palmer. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, delivering wines of perfume, intensity and concentration. Lurton finds that physiological maturity and analytical maturity are much more synchronized with the new farming methods, even if in a vintage such as 2018 he's suffered, producing a mere 6,000 bottles. Recent vintages have certainly been on a qualitative roll, and today Durfort Vivens unquestionably lives up to its 1855 second growth status.

James Suckling

Aromas of blackberries, black olives, lead pencil and blueberries. Full-bodied with very velvety tannins. It’s big and rich for Margaux, but then it tightens at the finish. It will come around with bottle age. One for the cellar. 88% cabernet sauvignon and 12% merlot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2026.

Druvor

Cabernet Sauvignon 90%, Merlot 10%
