Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Lafon-Rochet delivers impactful scents of baked blackberries, warm cassis and black cherry compote, with suggestions of chargrill, tar and tobacco leaf, plus a waft of wild mushrooms. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with black fruit preserves and earthy accents, supported by firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with great length, if a little chewy.

The nose is fruity, elegant, racy, precise and offers a good definition. It reveals notes of ripe blackberry, raspberry and small notes of cherry associated with small touches of flowers, cassis, racy minerality, graphite as well as very slight hints of nutmeg, chocolate and a very discreet hint of spices. The palate is fruity, elegant, well-balanced, precise and offers a beautiful definition, tension, concentration (but full of finesse), a fine aerial side, gourmandise, freshness, dynamism as well as richness . On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy blackberry, fleshy cassis and small notes of fresh/fleshy raspberry associated with small touches of red berries, flowers as well as slight hints of liquorice, dark chocolate, discreet hints of toasted almond and a very discreet hint of hazelnut. Tannins are elegant. A “multilayer” wine that requires work in the glass as well as patience to be fully appreciated and understood. Good length and persistence.
