Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and a 1% splash of Petit Verdot, the 2017 Montrose wine was run off into 60% new and 40% one-year old barrels where it was aged for 18 months. The grand vin represented 37% of the estate’s total production. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose takes some time to unfurl before revealing an impressively flamboyant core of black cherry preserves, warm cassis and baked plums with hints of red currant jelly, dark chocolate, licorice, cardamom and chargrill plus a gentle waft of candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity with a very elegant, modest weight, featuring super-ripe, finely-grained tannins and tons of freshness to lift and show-off a stunning array of gorgeous black fruit and fragrant sparks, finishing very long and refined. This is an incredibly classy, poised and sophisticated Montrose!
James Suckling
Extremely aromatic with currant, wild-herb and fresh-violet aromas. This is regal cabernet sauvignon at its finest. The palate has unwaveringly long and defined tannins that carry such fresh, piercingly pure, redcurrant and cassis flavors. A twin to the superb 2015? A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
Andreas Larsson - Tasted
Intense bright dark purple colour. Pure and mineral nose with layers of wild berries, cassis, plum, cedar wood and fine tobacco. The palate is dense and concentrated with a fine vein of freshness, structured but ripe tannin with layers of ripe dark fruit, pure cassis and cabernet flavours paired with a mild spiciness of fine oak, tobacco and coffee leading to a very long and dense yet sleek finish. Very stylish, just needing some more time to open.
VertdeVin
The nose is fruity and offers concentration, a fine freshness as well as a beautiful fine grain and slightly powdered. It reveals notes of blackberry, wild strawberry and ripe red berries associated with fine touches of cocoa, roasted oak, gravels (Graves), camphor, lily/lilac as well as fine touches of almond, gray pepper and subtle hints of caramelized oak. The palate is fruity, juicy, elegant, racy, fresh, well-balanced, beautifully defined and offers an acid frame, a beautiful freshness, finesse, vivacity, fat, fullness as well as a very beautiful finesse of the grain (slightly powdered). On the palate this wine expresses notes o cassis, blackberry, black cherry, ripe red berries and fleshy wild strawberry associated with small notes of fresh raspberry, cocoa, toasted oak, camphor, gravels (Graves) as well as discreet touches sweet spices and almond. Tannins are fine, elegant and well-built. Good length and persistence. (2026+)
