The 2019 Château Phelan Segur from Véronique Dausse is another brilliant Saint-Estèphe in the vintage, and this estate plays in the top handful of Saint-Estèphes out there. Offering lots of darker currants, spiced plums, Iron, tobacco, and damp earth on the nose, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a concentrated, tannic, yet balanced mouthfeel, and a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for a good 5-7 years and will be a brilliant wine over the following two decades.

This is a very classically structured Bordeaux with blackcurrant, walnut, cedar and hints of toasted oak. It’s reserved now, but shows very serious, polished tannins. Persistent and powerful with fantastic length. Very precise. Try after 2025.

The nose is fruity and offers a nice fleshiness and intensity of fruit. There are notes of fleshy red berries, crushed red berries and, more slightly, violet, combined with a hint of pulpy blackcurrant, fleshy plum, fine hints of violet, black tea, lily, as well as a fine hint of saffron, a very discreet, almost balsamic hint and an imperceptible hint of fresh vanilla. The palate is mineral, fresh, balanced, fruity and offers a nice definition, gourmandise, roundness, fleshiness/pulpiness of the fruit, brilliance, a finely tightened tannic structure as well as a fine airiness in the approach. Nice, crunchy (fruit) and a coating side. On the palate this wine expresses fleshy/juicy red berry, crushed raspberry and more slightly pulpy red plum notes combined with hints of fresh violet, rose, iodine salinity/graves as well as fine hints of liquorice stick, sweet blond tobacco, subtle graphite/camphor and mocha. The tannins are mellow. A subtle hint of toasted hazelnut in the background and an imperceptible hint of blueberry.

Is this the most over-performing estate in the Médoc? Director Véronique Dausse would surely riposte that it's simply performing at the level to which its well-situated vineyards and detail-oriented team entitle it; but in any case, the 2019 Phélan Ségur is a brilliant wine. Offering up aromas of cassis, sweet wild berries, rose petals, violets, licorice and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. This is another 2019 that en primeur purchasers can feel very pleased with.
This Saint-Estèphe estate has been one of the Médoc's rising stars for some years now, and director Véronique Dausse and her team have delivered a terrific 2019 that would embarrass many classified growths in a blind tasting. Some 70 hectares are planted at this address, with parcels concentrated around the château, opposite Château Montrose and on a gravel outcropping near the Pauillac border. Viticulture is thoughtful, with experiments in organic farming and covert crops; and winemaking is intelligent, with a cuvier equipped with small stainless steel tanks that have permitted parcel-by-parcel vinification since 2014. Macerations last three to four weeks, and some 300 hectoliters are fermented in 500-liter barrels. Phélan Ségur made good wines in the past (the 1989 stands out as one of the high points of yesteryear), but today, the estate is hitting new levels of quality and consistency, realizing all the potential of years such as 2019 but also over-performing in vintages such as 2017, and producing authoritative, concentrated wines with refined tannins and lively acids.
