On the nose, fruity with juiciness, freshness, a nice texture, depth and subtle profoundness. It reveals notes of tart/fresh strawberry, dense/juicy dark berries and hints of blackberry combined with hints of crisp plum, crisp strawberry, as well as hint of tonka bean, nutmeg, sweet spices, a discreet hint of green cardamom, green curry and hint of mocha. On the palate, fruity along with juiciness, acidity, sauavity, gourmandize, good defination, sauavity, precision, elegant, straightness, a small creaminess, density, a little obscurity, depth as well as a little tightness. The wine expresses notes of pulply/sparkling cassis, small juicy black berries and hints of fleshy/juicy redcurrant combined with touches of raspberry, violet plum and hints of sleek mineralogy, camphor, sweet blond tobacco, fine black tea. The tannins are elegant, creamy and offer richness. Good persistence.

Part of the Ducru-Beaucaillou stable, the 2020 Le Petit Ducru is a blend of 78% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. It has an alcohol of 13.75% and the pH is 3.74. It is set to age for 12 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with open-knit scents of ripe black plums, black cherries and mulberries, plus suggestions of cinnamon toast, potpourri and dried Provence herbs. The medium-bodied palate delivers plenty of juicy black fruits and a soft texture with unobtrusive acidity and a savory finish.

With its optimally situated gravel soils on the bank of the Gironde around its grand 19th-century château, Ducru-Beaucaillou can boast one of the finest terroirs of the entire Médoc. Planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare and farmed organically since 2018, with high canopies and seasonal cover crops, the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is increasing at the expense of Merlot. Macerations are classical, followed by élevage in long-seasoned new oak barrels, and only around one-third of the estate's Saint-Julien production makes it into the grand vin. Proprietor Bruno Borie envisages Ducru as something of a Renaissance villa, with its vegetable garden and livestock raised on site as well as viticulture, and he lives on the property; but Borie's vision is also modern, with an in-house research-and-development department.
